2024/2025 Season Concerts
2023/2024 Season Concerts
Please join the SSO for our season opener featuring an array of fascinating and appealing music by Canadian, American, Mexican and Argentinian composers. British Columbia’s Christine Donkin wrote her Four Poems in 2015, based on the poetry of New Brunswick poet Charles Roberts. Everyone will recognise Aaron Copland’s beloved Simple Gifts and The Little Horses, as well as Astor Piazzolla’s evocative tangos Libertango and Milonga del ángel. Colourfully orchestrated with an emphasis on instruments typical of the Veracruz style (trumpet, harp, and violins) and driven by its distinctive rhythm, José Moncayo’s Huapango has become an enduring classic.
The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition for countless dancers and families. It is a marker for the start of the holiday season and, for many, the beginning of a lifelong love for dance. It holds a special place in our hearts. Each year, from mid-November until early January, Canada’s Ballet Jörgen tours The Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition, bringing the joy of ballet to theatres across Ontario. The familiar music of Tchaikovsky’s score enchants audiences, and for a couple of hours we are transported to a whole new world. Children and adults alike are swept up in the magic of Klara’s adventure.
All Aboard! Join the Sault Symphony Orchestra in October on its European Tour. With music by Bartók, Parry, Fauré, Dvořák, De Falla, and Grieg, we will be visiting Romania, England, France, Bohemia, Spain and Norway. As we travel across the European continent, join the SSO on its journey through a wide array of styles, colours, and textures. Bon voyage.
Following last season’s acclaimed performance of Beethoven’s First Symphony and Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, the SSO will switch things around and present Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony and Beethoven’s Cariolan Overture. Like the Hebrides Overture, Mendelssohn wrote his Third Symphony after visiting Scotland. Beethoven’s Cariolan Overture was composed for the tragedy about the Roman general Gnaeus Marcius Coriolanus. James Gardiner, a native of Sault Ste.Marie, will be joining us from his post in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra to perform the Trumpet Concerto by Czech composer Neruda.
Our final concert takes us to New York City, as we present a selection of popular Broadway melodies. Musicals are some of the most popular and well-loved forms of entertainment. They have been a staple of culture for over a hundred years, andtheir popularity is ever-increasing. There are many reasons why Broadway musicals are so popular: they are entertaining, they tell stories that resonate with all audiences, and they have produced many of the greatest melodies ever written. Book your tickets early and join the SSO “On Broadway”.
